The bread which we break, does it not mean [that in eating it] we participate in and share a fellowship (a communion) in the body of Christ?

2 Corinthians 2:15
For we are the sweet fragrance of Christ [which exhales] unto God, [discernible alike] among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.

Colossians 3:15
And let the peace (soul harmony which comes) from Christ rule (act as umpire continually) in your hearts [deciding and settling with finality all questions that arise in your minds, in that peaceful state] to which as [members of Christ's] one body you were also called [to live]. And be thankful (appreciative), [giving praise to God always].

2 Thessalonians 3:5
May the Lord direct your hearts into [realizing and showing] the love of God and into the steadfastness and patience of Christ and in waiting for His return.

How much more surely shall the blood of Christ, Who by virtue of [His] eternal Spirit [His own preexistent divine personality] has offered Himself as an unblemished sacrifice to God, purify our consciences from dead works and lifeless observances to serve the [ever] living God?

1 Peter 4:1
So, since Christ suffered in the flesh for us, for you, arm yourselves with the same thought and purpose [patiently to suffer rather than fail to please God]. For whoever has suffered in the flesh [having the mind of Christ] is done with [intentional] sin [has stopped pleasing himself and the world, and pleases God].

2 Peter 1:8
For as these qualities are yours and increasingly abound in you, they will keep [you] from being idle or unfruitful unto the [full personal] knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).

1 John 3:24
All who keep His commandments [who obey His orders and follow His plan, live and continue to live, to stay and] abide in Him, and He in them. 2 John 1:9
Anyone who runs on ahead [of God] and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ [who is not content with what He taught] does not have God; but he who continues to live in the doctrine (teaching) of Christ [does have God], he has both the Father and the Son.

And this is the message [the message of promise] which we have heard from Him and now are reporting to you: God is Light, and there is no darkness in Him at all [no, not in any way].

1 John 2:27
But as for you, the anointing (the sacred appointment, the unction) which you received from Him abides [permanently] in you; [so] then you have no need that anyone should instruct you. But just as His anointing teaches you concerning everything and is true and is no falsehood, so you must abide in (live in, never depart from) Him [being rooted in Him, knit to Him], just as [His anointing] has taught you [to do].

Ephesians 2:5
Even when we were dead (slain) by [our own] shortcomings and trespasses, He made us alive together in fellowship and in union with Christ; [He gave us the very life of Christ Himself, the same new life with which He quickened Him, for] it is by grace (His favor and mercy which you did not deserve) that you are saved (delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ’s salvation).

Colossians 2:13
And you who were dead in trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your flesh (your sensuality, your sinful carnal nature), [God] brought to life together with [Christ], having [freely] forgiven us all our transgressions.

Colossians 2:20
If then you have died with Christ to material ways of looking at things and have escaped from the world’s crude and elemental notions and teachings of externalism, why do you live as if you still belong to the world? [Why do you submit to rules and regulations?-such as]

Colossians 3:1
If then you have been raised with Christ [to a new life, thus sharing His resurrection from the dead], aim at and seek the [rich, eternal treasures] that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

For [as far as this world is concerned] you have died, and your [new, real] life is hidden with Christ in God.

26 Grace definitions. Part 4

It is important that we know what grace is. We mustn’t just drift aimlessly from day to day. Grace is not that we just hope we make it. It is….

1. Grace is God’s enrichment of life.

I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given to you by Christ Jesus, that you were enriched in everything by Him in all utterance and all knowledge, (1 Corinthians 1:4, 5 NKJV)

2. Grace is is what God does in you that lines up exactly with His will. We see this in Gideon, Moses, Joshua and other “heroes of the faith”.

3. Grace is our God given gifts.

Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; (Romans 12:6 NKJV)

4. Grace is a perfect fit for my weakness.

5. Grace is wisdom, and wisdom is grace.

6. The law requires. Grace enables. (Bill Johnson)

7. Favor is Grace. Grace is the vehicle God uses on occasions to ensure that we get precisely what we don’t deserve. It is very hard to grasp!! (Frank Damazio)

8. Grace is the Divine influence on the heart to assure us about our righteousness.

9. Grace is Jesus doing in me what I can’t do.

10. Grace is God’s divine influence on the heart. (Michael Connolly)

11. Grace is God’s storehouse. (Ray Andrews).

12. Grace is God’s resources gifted to me.

13. Grace is God’s unlimited provision bought into our lives. (Ray Andrews)

14. Grace is where God meets us with everything we need.

15. Grace is life flow. When I am with other Christians, grace flows from member to member: that is, life flows from member to member. Hence I value my brothers and sisters because we are “anointed” to belong. (see 1 John 2:19-20)

16. Grace is holding up Jesus and his finished work. (Paul White)

17. God’s grace is the power He gives us to effect change in our own lives. Ken Legg. Toxic relationships p32

18. Grace is the power in the “yet not I”.

But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. (1 Corinthians 15:10 NIV)

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20 KJV)

Grace for salvation and living is found in the “yet not I”

19. Grace is God’s energy. It’s His energy to live holy.

But because God was so gracious, so very generous, here I am. And I’m not about to let his grace go to waste. Haven’t I worked hard trying to do more than any of the others? Even then, my work didn’t amount to all that much. It was God giving me the work to do, God giving me the energy to do it. (1 Corinthians 15:10, 11 MSG)

20. Grace is the capacity of God in me. This is more than just mercy which is forgiveness of sin. Clint Byers

21. The law requires, grace provides.

22. Grace is refinement and inward working. It is the sharpening tool in God’s hand to help us believe Him. Its a reminding of who we are. The Spirit reminds us…that is the testing…who we are – His !. That is the process of grace !. Clint Byars

23. Grace is more than the idea that God is good. God looks on our hearts to help us live out of a pure heart. We are allowing him to work in our life. We connect with it to manifest in our life. It is a built in source that establishes us in our true nature. Clint Byars

25. Grace is the opportunity to participate in all God’s promises which are yes and amen.

26. Grace is God’s influence to give you a capacity that is not your own.

(Don’t forget to look up parts 1,2 & 3)

Being a “doer” is to be a “poetic performer”

So, we read we are to be “doers of the Word”.

That used to be preached with a bit of a “works mentality” attached.

But being a “doer of the Word” may not be what is generally taught. In fact, “doer” is an unfortunate translation. Let’s look at the Word, and the correct definitions…

For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. (James 1:23-25 NKJV)

What does “doer” mean here ?. Is it helping ladies across the street ?. Here is the Vines definition of “doer” (Greek is “poietes”; a verb or “doing” word)

A “doer” is a poetic performer. It is one who “produces” something in a dramatic way. In fact, this same Greek word is translated as “poet” in Acts 17:28.

What about this one from Jesus;

“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” (Matthew 7:24-27 NKJV)

“Does” here is almost the same word as “doer” in James (Greek is “poieo”);

Can you see the words; “produce”, “author”, “celebrate”.

To be a true “doer” of the Word, we need to be a “poetic performer”. We need to “author”, “produce” and “celebrate” the Christ in us. We “dramatize” who we are in Him !. We bring to life in an emotional way, the finished work of who we are in Him !.

A person recently vehemently disagreed with me about this because I was preaching that not only do we have a righteous position in Christ, but we can also feel it. I said that that our righteous identity should “show out”. I said that we need to add emotion to our righteous position and “bring it to life”.

This person said “righteousness is not an emotion but a position”. I replied that it is most definitely a position, but we can feel it too !.

Here is my proof that we can “poetically perform” & “celebrate” our righteousness by adding some emotion to it;

The righteous shall be glad in the Lord, and trust in Him. And all the upright in heart shall glory. (Psalms 64:10 NKJV)

But let the righteous be glad; Let them rejoice before God; Yes, let them rejoice exceedingly. (Psalms 68:3 NKJV)

Serve the Lord with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. (Psalms 100:2 NKJV)

The hope of the righteous will be gladness, But the expectation of the wicked will perish. (Proverbs 10:28 NKJV)

So you can FEEL righteous !. You can FEEL God’s love. You can FEEL like a son !. Don’t go all religious on God and say “I know I am righteous/loved/a son, so I live out of that”…”poetically perform” those truths !. That way, you will be a doer, and his life will flow from you to others !. You will “be blessed” !.

A few more on gladness…

And it will be said in that day: “Behold, this is our God; We have waited for Him, and He will save us. This is the Lord; We have waited for Him; We will be glad and rejoice in His salvation.” (Isaiah 25:9 NKJV)

Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. (Matthew 5:12 NKJV)

but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. (I Peter 4:13 NKJV)

There are many more, but you get the picture.

When I tell my wife “I love you”, I don’t sound like a robot !. But I add some emotion to ensure she “feels” my love; not just know it. I don’t say “I made my vows 30 years ago, so live from that”. Love needs to be updated regularly. We “gather Jesus” daily like manna in the wilderness.

If we look at the passage in James, there is a truth that we have missed.

A “doer” is one who sees who they are in Christ, and is free to “produce” that life from the heart and position…through the emotions until it bleeds out of them in their behaviours, thoughts and actions !. If you “poetically perform” the Jesus in you, it will gush out of you !. You are free to do this, and will “be blessed in all you do”.

You don’t have to “fake it till you make it” because you have already made it in Christ !. We just bring to life in an emotional way, the Life that is with in by “celebration”. We add emotion to it. “Be blessed in all you do” !.

Therefore with joy you will draw water From the wells of salvation. (Isaiah 12:3 NKJV)

To whom were the 10 commandments given ?

And what great nation is there that has such statutes and righteous judgments as are in all this law which I set before you this day? (Deuteronomy 4:8 NKJV)

So, who did God actually give the 10 commandments to ?. Here is the answer…you may be surprised !…

And Moses called all Israel, and said to them: “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your hearing today, that you may learn them and be careful to observe them. The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. The Lord did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, those who are here today, all of us who are alive. (Deuteronomy 5:1-3 NKJV)

Did you get that ?.

The Mosaic law was given to one particular generation of Hebrews…not to anyone else.

Who said that ?….Moses Himself !.

Did that generation of Hebrews keep the covenant ?.

God Himself gives us the answer…

“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. (Jeremiah 31:31, 32 NKJV)

God says “I made a covenant with “their fathers”, but THEY broke it !.

So, why the big deal ?.

Well, our behaviour, or breaking the law is not our problem…our problem is a sin nature !. Our problem is not Moses but Adam !. Our problem is that we are born in judgement because we are born in Adam with his fallen nature.

This has profound consequence in how we preach the gospel, and how we shepherd people. That is, we have to get people “born of God” so they can “participate in a Divine nature” from “an incorruptible seed”. (2 Peter 1:4, 1 Peter 1:23). We need them to “lay hold” of their inheritance by “be being filled with the Holy Ghost”, & being spritually minded; not by changing their behaviour !.

So, we look to Adam as our problem; not Moses.

So do we get a pair of scissors & cut through the portion of our bible that has the Mosaic laws ?.

No !. Why ?.

Because the Mosaic laws shows us God’s nature. It shows us that we fulfill the law of love by not killing, stealing, murdering, being unfaithful, honoring others etc. It reveals the moral aspect of God. This is not to be taken lightly, but shows us how to respond to God’s grace given to us in Christ who is the sacrifice of the new and everlasting covenant. (By the way, the new covenant is the everlasting covenant carried out in time). Hence grace is not lawlessness, but fulfilling the law of love !.

Again, our preaching, teaching and spreading the good news is about how we are already judged in Adam, and that we have taken on his old sinful nature at birth. Therefore, we need another birth (being “born again”, or “born of God”) by repentance of heart and faith to participate in God’s nature. As we focus on Him, we become like the image of Christ. No law preaching or behaviour modification necessary. In fact, behaviour teaching just puts people in their own resources. Yet grace is “His ability in place of our inability”.

Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising. (Acts 17:29 NKJV)

Enjoy your life as a son !. Remember, you have a new nature…because you have a different a father now !. Not Moses, not Adam, but God !.

Then they reviled him and said, “You are His disciple, but we are Moses’ disciples. (John 9:28 NKJV)

We have been “re-gened”

Titus 3:5 “not by deeds of uprightness which we performed [in our unsaved state], but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Spirit whom He bestowed upon us abundantly through our Saviour, Jesus Christ, in order that, having been justified by His grace, we might become heirs according to the expectation of life eternal.” (Wuest version)

This compact/power packed passage is a great example of the great exchange. (That is, we give Him our life, and He gives us His life).

“Washing” - means “to bathe”, or “the act of bathing”.

“Regeneration” – means “new birth”, “recreation”. The blue letter bible (accessed 16.5.2013) says that involves “renovation, regeneration, the production if a life consecrated to God, a radical change of mind for the better…restoration of a thing to its pristine state..”.

“Bathe” here must surely allude to water baptism. Water baptism is when we bury the old life. When we come out of the water, we come out “re-gened”. Whilst this happens at our re-birth, water baptism; the “answer to a good conscious”, is the example, the proof, the outward expression of this truth.

(I am glad God is practical and doesn’t require us to be baptized in dirt !. He has only asked us it be baptized in water !.)

So, in being “bathed”, we have been “re-gened”. We have a new DNA. We have a new Father, a new origin, a new nature (2 Peter 1:4) which is incorruptible (1 Peter 1:23). An exchange has taken place. Our old life has been buried, and we have received the very Life of Christ. (John 1:16).

The remainder of the above passage tells us that once we are “re-gened”, we have become heirs of eternal life.

Eternal life is the everlasting covenant that was promised amongst the Godhead before time began (Titus 1:2).

The new DNA brings good works !. See verse 8. In fact, the writer of this passage (The Holy Spirit), wants us to be affirmed “constantly” of this “faithful saying”. It is “good and profitable”.

Good works cannot come without a “bath” and being “re-gened”. Why ?. Because regeneration is the only thing in this world that changes (or should we say, “ex-changes) our motivation. Our “want to” is changed (ex-changed) forever. Even when we slip into the flesh, and fleshly thinking, our new nature screams at us “this is not you anymore”.

So, the only thing stopping us from a new life and and new way of living is an un-renewed mind.

Lets change our mind to what God has already changed (or ex-changed) and watch how your new ex-changed/re-gened nature will change your life forever !.

“O mountains of Gilboa, Let there be no dew nor rain upon you, Nor fields of offerings. For the shield of the mighty is cast away there! The shield of Saul, not anointed with oil. (II Samuel 1:21 NKJV)

David is lamenting the death of king Saul. He wrote a poem/song about his grief, that the one whom Samuel anointed as king was now involved in an assisted suicide. How did it get down to this ?.

In 1 Samuel 10:1, we read that “Samuel took a flask of oil & poured it on his head“. Yet a grieving David writes about Saul’s shield that was “not anointed with oil”.

Saul was the people’s king. David was God’s king.

So what or Whom does she shield represent ?. The first mention of the word “shield” tells us…

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.” (Genesis 15:1 NKJV)

Here are some more to show us that God Himself is our shield…

The God of my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, My stronghold and my refuge; My Savior, You save me from violence. (II Samuel 22:3 NKJV)

As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him. (II Samuel 22:31 NKJV)
But You, O Lord, are a shield for me, My glory and the One who lifts up my head. (Psalms 3:3 NKJV)

(There are other scriptures that our shield is also our “salvation”, “help” and “truth”. But these are aspects of God Himself).

Back to Saul…

It is not enough to have a “head knowledge” about God, as Saul did. Our shield needs to be anointed. We need to have an experiential knowledge about Jesus, and the things of the Kingdom. We need “spiritual eyes”.

An Amalekite was telling David that he killed Saul (which was a lie as Saul fell on his own sword). The Amalekites are a type of the flesh.

If we allow our shield to “not be anointed”, the flesh will kill us. We must not put confidence in our flesh; which is our own resources. It is interesting that Goliath didn’t even carry his own shield: someone else carried it for him;

So the Philistine came, and began drawing near to David, and the man who bore the shield went before him. (I Samuel 17:41 NKJV)

Flesh gives us no protection (see Ephesians 6:16). Pride and unbelief leave you unprotected and without strength. That is, no anointing.

Yet, an “anointed” shield brings with it all the attributes you need to live. Think of these aspects of the Spirit which are yours from God Himself;

The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. (Isaiah 11:2 NKJV)

Because of all this, our Shield protects and saves us – this is a life giving shield !.

“But be constantly growing in the sphere of grace and an experiential knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and to the day of eternity.” 2 Peter 3:18

Are you carrying your own shield ?. Is your shield anointed ?.

Prepare the table, Set a watchman in the tower, Eat and drink. Arise, you princes, Anoint the shield! (Isaiah 21:5 NKJV)

PS. according http://www.biblestudytools.com/dictionaries/eastons-bible-dictionary/anoint.html accessed on 3rd April 2013, shields of leather were anointed with oil to keep them “supple and fit for war”. Interesting !.
